ABOUT THE CONGRESS

Speakers from a wide range of countries representing marine stations and networks came together at the World Congress of Marine Stations between the 17th and the 19th of November, 2021. Throughout the Congress, the international marine science community showed wide support for the full establishment of the World Association of Marine Stations, both for its potential as a coordination tool for international research, and as a catalyst for regional marine research cooperation. Thus, we are pleased to announce that a joint communiqué was agreed on the establishment for the World Association of Marine Stations.

The signatories to the Communiqué mark the inauguration of the first World Association of Marine Stations Steering Committee. While the Management Committee will continue to work on the day to day planning of the Association, the Steering Committee will shape together the future of the Association, including within the already planned online event in June 2022 and in person Congress in 2023.

The support for the WAMS initiative was further complemented by the endorsement received by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science and the potential role of the Association as a Decade Implementing Partner. Ultimately, 2022 will be an important year for the development of WAMS, so we look forward to engaging with the wider marine science community to foster research and coordination globally.

If you are interested in being part of the WAMS initiative then please contact the WAMS Chair, Dr Matt Frost at matfr@mba.ac.uk or WAMS Secretary at worldmarinestations@mba.ac.uk
